statement
Victoria Norton is a visual artist who works fluidly between mediums and materials. Most of her projects manifest in sculpture and installation. Through process of play and exploration with materials, space, and environmental conditions. With an interest in the American West—it’s characters, mythology, world-building, and ideas of futurity—they explore these themes both positive and negative. Contemplating ideas of freedom, movement, displacement, desire, and queering of typical roles.

I have been creating work that investigates absences and desire, how they persist and haunt in memory both temporally and spatially. Through the use of themes of the American West – from cinema and landscape to masculinity and control, as well as imagery of my childhood growing up around animals, farms, and rodeos in Nebraska – I begin to play with staging and installation to produce my work. Mediums are fluid in my practice; wood, metal, ceramics, light, painting, video, sound, and kinetics are all incorporated into sculptures that create a dialogue in the space between them.
